Black Bean Brownies Recipe

Updated:

Who knew brownies could be both ridiculously indulgent and secretly packed with goodness? These Black Bean Brownies are a total revelation!

They’re ultra-fudgy, intensely chocolatey, and have that irresistible crackly top—all without a speck of flour. Instead, we’re blending up creamy black beans to create the perfect rich texture, with an extra boost of protein and fiber. But don’t worry, you’d never guess they’re in there!

If you’re skeptical about baking with beans, trust me on this one. They add moisture and density without affecting the flavor, making these brownies just as decadent as your classic go-to recipe.

So whether you need a post-workout treat, a guilt-free dessert, or just a way to satisfy those late-night chocolate cravings, this recipe has you covered. Let’s get baking!

Ingredients

Before we dive into the mixing and baking, let’s talk ingredients! Everything in this recipe works together to create a perfectly rich, fudgy texture with just the right amount of sweetness. Ready to see what you’ll need?

  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup melted coconut oil or butter
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (optional but highly recommended!)

Instructions

Now that we’ve got our ingredients ready, it’s time to bring everything together! These steps will guide you through creating the ultimate fudgy, chocolate-packed brownies with ease.

  1. Preheat Yyour oven:
Set it to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Blend the Beans:
In a food processor or blender, puree the black beans until completely smooth.
  3. Mix the Wet Ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together the blended black beans, melted coconut oil (or butter), maple syrup, vanilla extract, and eggs until smooth.
  4. Combine the Dry Ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Blend Together:
Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, stirring until a thick batter forms. Fold in the chocolate chips if using.
  6. Bake:
Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Cool and Enjoy:
Let the brownies cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes before slicing. This helps them set up perfectly!

Tweaks and Additions

Want to make these even more irresistible? Here are some fun ways to switch things up!

  • Extra Indulgence:
Swirl in a spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter before baking. This adds a creamy, nutty richness that pairs beautifully with the deep chocolate flavors. You can also lightly swirl it in for a marbled effect or mix it directly into the batter for an extra smooth and nutty taste.
  • Nutty Crunch:
Stir in a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans. These add a delightful crunch to every bite, balancing out the fudgy texture. Toasting the nuts beforehand enhances their flavor and makes them even more irresistible!
  • Mocha Vibes:
Add 1 teaspoon of espresso powder for a deeper chocolate flavor. The espresso enhances the natural bitterness of the cocoa, creating a more intense and rich chocolate experience. Perfect for coffee lovers who want a hint of boldness in their brownies!
  • Vegan-Friendly:
Swap the eggs for flax eggs (1 tablespoon flaxseed meal + 3 tablespoons water per egg). Let the mixture sit for a few minutes until it thickens to an egg-like consistency. This keeps the brownies moist and chewy while making them entirely plant-based!
  • Spicy Twist:
Add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or a dash of cinnamon for a subtle heat that enhances the chocolate flavor. A little spice makes these brownies extra unique!

These black bean brownies are the ultimate balance of rich, fudgy, and just a little wholesome!

They’re perfect for satisfying a chocolate craving while sneaking in some extra goodness. Trust me, once you try them, you might never go back to regular brownies again. Let me know if you give them a go!

  1. 25 minutes was nowhere near enough time to bake these. It was more like double that time. I kept needing to add time so I lost track of how much total time they needed. The taste was meh. I wouldn’t make these again. They need whip cream or ice cream with them cuz by themselves the taste is weird. My son liked them with whip cream so that’s a win.

    • I wanted to add an update to my previous review – these brownies tasted delicious after sitting in the fridge for a couple hours! Definitely best when cold.
